For centuries, people have been drinking coffee to stay awake and active. The caffeine in coffee stimulates the central nervous system, giving you a temporary but powerful boost of alertness and energy. Whether it’s an espresso or a cup of creamy latte, some of us just can’t function properly without coffee.
But coffee does much more than give you an energy boost. It also comes with several health benefits you probably never even heard of before.
It Minimizes the Risk of Cancer
Cancer is one of the most common illnesses in the world, taking millions of lives every year. Although there’s been speculation about coffee and its alleged links to cancer, recent studies have shown it actually has the opposite effect.
Drinking coffee can minimize the chances of certain cancers from developing. For example, the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) made a meta-analysis of a number of cancer studies and found that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of developing liver cancer.
Likewise, research by the Imperial College, London found evidence that coffee can help reduces womb cancer risk.
Lowered Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
According to a longitudinal study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, people who drink 6 or more cups of coffee a day had a 22% lower risk of developing diabetes. Similarly, a study by the Department of Nutrition at Harvard showed the risk of type II diabetes decreases by 9% for each cup of coffee consumed daily.
It Keeps You Mentally Healthy
There is strong evidence that drinking coffee may lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A study published in the European Journal of Neurology found that exposure to caffeine (through drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages) was inversely associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
In another study, this time done throughout a 10-year research period, researchers found that drinking coffee was correlated to a reduced risk of suicide. Harvard’s School of Public Health also found that women who consumed 4 or more cups of coffee per day were 20% less likely to suffer from depression.
Although there are studies on the negative effects of coffee to your cardiovascular system, a recent study found the opposite. Research done by the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health found that drinking moderate amounts of coffee can actually reduce your chances of a heart attack. Researchers found that the participants who drank three to four cups a day had the lowest risk of developing clogged arteries.
A study on Greek-boiled coffee has been linked to heart health and longevity. The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that showed coffee drinkers had a lower risk of dying prematurely due to illnesses like diabetes, certain forms of cancer, and heart disease.
One study in Japan found that men who drank at least 3 cups of coffee a day had 24% lower risk of dying early from disease. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that women who drank coffee had lower risk of death caused by heart disease, certain cancers, and other factors. Instead, coffee consumption was found to promote a longer lifespan.
And to top it all off, a Harvard study also confirmed that those who drink 1 to 5 cups of coffee per day avoid diseases linked to premature death.
Now, these health benefits don’t necessarily mean that you should start drinking twice the amount of coffee you normally would drink every day. Again, the golden rule with coffee, and pretty much everything else, is moderation. A couple of cups of coffee a day will not only help stay energetic and productive, it can also protect your health.
